What you will actually receive
This converter uses the market reference rate. Nobody in Nigeria trades at the market reference rate. Understanding the gap is the difference between a good trade and a bad one.
There are three costs between the number above and the coins that land in your account.
| Cost | Typical size | Who takes it |
|---|---|---|
| P2P spread — the merchant's margin over the reference rate | 1–3% on stablecoins, wider on volatile coins and out of hours | The merchant |
| Exchange trading fee, if you buy on the order book instead | 0.1–0.25% | The exchange |
| Naira transfer fee | ₦10–₦50, or free on some fintechs | Your bank |
| Network fee, when you withdraw to a wallet | Cents on TRC-20, dollars on ERC-20 | The blockchain |
Notice the order of magnitude. The P2P spread is ten to thirty times the exchange's trading fee. Nigerians spend a great deal of energy hunting the lowest-fee exchange and then accept a merchant three percent off the reference rate. Optimise the spread first.
A worked example at ₦500,000
Assume a reference rate of ₦1,600 per USDT. You want to convert ₦500,000.
| Route | Effective rate | USDT received | Cost vs reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reference rate (theoretical) | ₦1,600 | 312.50 | — |
| Good P2P merchant, +1% | ₦1,616 | 309.41 | ₦4,950 |
| Average P2P merchant, +2% | ₦1,632 | 306.37 | ₦9,800 |
| Bad rate, +4% (late night, thin book) | ₦1,664 | 300.48 | ₦19,200 |
The difference between a good merchant and a bad one on a single ₦500,000 trade is about ₦14,000. Doing that trade monthly, the annual difference is roughly ₦170,000 — for the same asset, on the same platform, with two minutes more attention.
Turning the number into an actual trade
Check the reference rate here first
So you know what a fair quote looks like before you open the app.
Open the P2P book and read three offers, not one
Sort by price, then discard any merchant with fewer than 500 completed orders or a completion rate below 98%.
Trade in daylight hours
Nigerian P2P books are deepest between roughly 9am and 9pm. Spreads widen noticeably late at night.
Split anything large
Two or three orders with different merchants beats one large order — better average rate and less exposure if one goes wrong.
Use neutral narration
Never write crypto, USDT or Bitcoin in the transfer description. See banks and crypto.
Record the naira you actually paid
That figure is your tax cost base, not the reference rate. See crypto tax.
How this tool gets its numbers
crypto.net.ng serves static pages — there is no server doing calculations for you. This tool reads a public market-data API directly from your browser and renders the result on your device. Three consequences worth knowing:
- Nothing you type is sent to us. Amounts you enter stay in your browser.
- An ad-blocker or a network block can stop it. If the numbers do not appear, that is usually why. The page tells you rather than showing a blank space.
- A market reference rate is not a P2P quote. This is the single most important thing to understand about any naira crypto tool — see Nigerian P2P rates for why the two differ and by how much.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 USDT in naira?
The live figure appears in the converter above. Set the direction to crypto → naira, choose Tether and enter 1. Remember a P2P merchant will typically quote you 1–3% above that when selling to you and slightly below it when buying from you.
How do I convert naira to crypto?
Enter the naira amount in the converter to see the quantity at the reference rate, then execute the trade on an exchange — either on the order book or through P2P. Our P2P guide covers the mechanics.
Why is the converter rate different from what my merchant offers?
The converter uses a global market reference rate. A merchant's quote includes their margin, plus a premium reflecting local naira demand. A 1–2% gap on stablecoins is normal; 4% or more means you should look at other offers.
How much naira do I need to start buying crypto?
Most Nigerian-friendly platforms let you trade from a few thousand naira, and the ₦5,000 preset exists for that reason. At small sizes fixed costs matter proportionally more, so buying ₦5,000 weekly generally beats buying ₦1,000 daily.
Does this converter work offline?
No. It needs a network connection to read the current rate. If the figures do not load, the page will tell you rather than showing a blank space.
