The five layers you actually pay
| Layer | Typical size in Nigeria | Visible? |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Spread — P2P merchant margin, or the margin inside a quoted price | 1–3% | Usually hidden |
| 2. Trading fee | 0.1–0.25% spot; 1.4–3% instant buy | Yes |
| 3. Naira deposit fee | ₦0–₦50, or a small percentage | Yes |
| 4. Naira withdrawal fee | ₦50–₦200 flat, or a percentage | Yes |
| 5. Crypto network fee | Under $1 on TRC-20; $2–$30 on ERC-20 | Yes |
Layer 1 is ten to thirty times layer 2, and it is the one nobody compares. A platform advertising a 0.1% trading fee while quoting you a price 2.5% off the market is more expensive than one charging 0.25% at a fair price. Always check the rate you are being given against live naira prices.
Worked example: ₦500,000 into USDT
| Route | Spread | Trading fee | Transfer fees | All-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P2P, top merchant, daytime | ≈1% | 0% | ₦50 | ≈₦5,050 |
| Order book on a licensed exchange | Order-book spread, small | 0.16–0.25% | ₦50 | ≈₦1,300–₦1,800 |
| Nigerian platform, single quoted price | Inside the price | 1.4% | ₦0–₦50 | ≈₦7,000 |
| P2P, average merchant | ≈2% | 0% | ₦50 | ≈₦10,050 |
| Instant buy on a global platform | Inside the price | ≈2.99% | ₦50 | ≈₦15,000 |
| Card purchase | Plus FX spread | 2–5% | — | ≈₦15,000–₦40,000 |
| P2P at 3am, thin book | ≈4% | 0% | ₦50 | ≈₦20,050 |
Read the second row against the second-to-last. The cheapest and most expensive routes to the same outcome differ by roughly ₦19,000 on ₦500,000 — and the difference is almost entirely spread and timing, not the fee anyone advertises.

So which is actually cheapest?
| If you are | Cheapest route |
|---|---|
| Buying under ₦50,000 | Any zero-P2P-fee platform with a good merchant. At this size the flat fees matter more than the percentages. |
| Buying ₦50,000–₦1,000,000 | P2P on Bybit or Bitget — 0% platform fee, and read three offers before accepting one. |
| Buying above ₦1,000,000 | Order book on a licensed exchange, or P2P split across several merchants |
| Buying above ₦10,000,000 | A registered OTC desk — see selling for naira |
| Trading frequently | Lowest spot fee, and check maker rebates and fee tiers |
| Prioritising simplicity over cost | Quidax or Busha, accepting a wider built-in spread |
| Prioritising licensing over cost | CEX.IO |
Seven ways to actually reduce what you pay
Check the reference rate before every trade
Thirty seconds on live prices. This saves more than everything else combined.
Trade between 10am and 6pm
Deepest Nigerian books, tightest spreads. Late-night trading costs 2–3% in spread alone.
Read three P2P offers, not one
And discard merchants below 500 orders or 98% completion regardless of rate.
Never use instant buy for anything significant
2.99% versus 0.16% for the same purchase. Use the spot order book.
Withdraw on TRC-20
About $1 instead of $2–$30. See networks.
Batch your withdrawals
Flat fees favour fewer, larger transfers. Monthly rather than weekly.
Do not swap inside a wallet
Wallet swaps carry a service fee on top of the pool spread. Trade on the exchange and withdraw.
Put the numbers side by side. Moving from a 0.25% exchange to a 0.1% exchange saves ₦750 on ₦500,000. Moving from a 3% merchant to a 1% merchant saves ₦10,000 on the same trade. The second decision is worth thirteen times the first, and takes about two minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Which crypto exchange has the lowest fees in Nigeria?
For most Nigerian sizes, P2P on Bybit or Bitget — both charge 0% P2P fee, so your only cost is the merchant spread. For order-book buying, CEX.IO at 0.16% maker and 0.25% taker. But the platform's fee is the smaller question: the merchant spread you accept matters ten to thirty times more.
What is the cheapest way to buy crypto in Nigeria?
An order-book purchase on a licensed exchange funded by NIBSS transfer, or P2P with a top merchant during daytime hours. On ₦500,000 the cheapest route costs about ₦1,300–₦5,000 all-in, while a card purchase or a 3am P2P trade costs ₦15,000–₦40,000.
Why is the P2P spread more important than the trading fee?
Because it is ten to thirty times larger. Moving from a 0.25% to a 0.1% exchange saves ₦750 on ₦500,000; moving from a 3% merchant to a 1% merchant saves ₦10,000 on the same trade. Most Nigerian traders optimise the smaller number.
Is instant buy worth the extra fee?
Almost never for a meaningful amount. Instant buy commonly costs around 3% against 0.16–0.25% on the spot order book — roughly ₦14,000 more on a ₦500,000 purchase for a few seconds of convenience.
What are the hidden fees on Nigerian crypto platforms?
The spread inside a single quoted price. Platforms that show you one buy price and one sell price with no visible fee have their margin in the gap — compare the price you are offered against the live market reference rather than assuming a zero-fee platform is free.
How can I pay less in network fees?
Withdraw on TRC-20, which costs about a dollar, rather than ERC-20 at $2–$30, and batch withdrawals monthly rather than weekly since network and flat fees favour fewer, larger transfers.
