What the bands mean
| Range | Label | What is usually happening |
|---|---|---|
| 0–24 | Extreme fear | Prices falling, volume in panic selling, social sentiment negative. Historically these have been better times to accumulate than to sell — which is precisely when it is hardest. |
| 25–44 | Fear | Caution dominant, buyers hesitant. |
| 45–55 | Neutral | No strong directional feeling. The reading carries little information here. |
| 56–74 | Greed | Momentum positive, retail interest rising. |
| 75–100 | Extreme greed | Euphoria, leverage building, everyone certain it goes higher. Historically the worst time to add risk. |
How the index is built
The index published by alternative.me combines several inputs into one figure, weighted roughly as follows: price volatility against recent averages, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin's share of the market, and search trends. It is Bitcoin-weighted, which matters — it is closer to a Bitcoin sentiment index than a whole-market one.
What it does not contain is anything about your position, your time horizon, your income, or the naira. A Nigerian saver holding USDT to protect purchasing power over three years and a leveraged day trader read the same number and should draw entirely different conclusions from it — or, in the saver's case, none at all.
Using it without being used by it
The index is not a signal. "Extreme fear" has preceded both recoveries and much deeper falls. Anyone telling you it reliably marks a bottom is selling something. Its genuine use is narrower and more valuable: it is a mirror.
The honest use is as a check on yourself. When the reading is at 85 and you feel an urgent need to buy more, the index is telling you that your urgency is the market's urgency and not your own analysis. When it is at 12 and you want to sell everything, the same applies in reverse. Recognising that your emotion is the crowd's emotion is worth more than any signal.
Check it before you act, not to decide what to do
If you are about to make an unplanned trade, look at the number and ask whether you are following a plan or a mood.
Let it adjust size, not direction
Some disciplined investors buy a little more on their schedule during extreme fear and a little less during extreme greed. The schedule does the work; the index only tilts the amount.
Ignore it entirely if you are saving in stablecoins
If your position is USDT held against naira depreciation, market sentiment is not your variable. The naira is.
Never use it with leverage
Sentiment extremes are exactly when volatility liquidates leveraged positions in both directions.
The Nigerian angle the index misses
This is a global, dollar-denominated, Bitcoin-weighted index, and there are two Nigerian realities it cannot see.
The first is that a Nigerian holder's return has two components — the asset in dollars, and the naira. The index tracks only the first. A period of "extreme fear" in dollar terms can coincide with a comfortable naira gain.
The second is that for a large share of Nigerian crypto users the position is not a bet on price at all. Someone converting salary into USDT each month to preserve purchasing power is not expressing a market view; they are opting out of one. For them the index is interesting and irrelevant. The framing that actually applies is in where to put ₦1 million.
Sentiment is one of several lenses
| Question | Look at |
|---|---|
| How does the crowd feel? | This index |
| Is the whole market moving, or just my coin? | Market cap & heatmap |
| What is it worth in naira right now? | Live naira prices |
| What would I actually get if I sold? | P2P rates |
| Am I up or down after fees? | Profit calculator |
How this tool gets its numbers
crypto.net.ng serves static pages — there is no server doing calculations for you. This tool reads a public market-data API directly from your browser and renders the result on your device. Three consequences worth knowing:
- Nothing you type is sent to us. Amounts you enter stay in your browser.
- An ad-blocker or a network block can stop it. If the numbers do not appear, that is usually why. The page tells you rather than showing a blank space.
- A market reference rate is not a P2P quote. This is the single most important thing to understand about any naira crypto tool — see Nigerian P2P rates for why the two differ and by how much.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index?
A daily sentiment reading between 0 and 100 that combines volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends into one figure. Zero is extreme fear, 100 is extreme greed.
What does the index reading mean today?
Today's figure and its classification are at the top of this page, with the last thirty days charted below so you can see whether the reading is a shift or a continuation.
Should I buy when the index shows extreme fear?
Extreme fear has historically been a better time to accumulate than to sell, but it has also preceded much deeper falls. Treat it as a check on your own emotional state rather than a signal — and never use it to justify leverage.
Is the Fear and Greed Index reliable?
It reliably describes sentiment. It does not reliably predict price. Its real value is telling you that the urgency you feel is the crowd's urgency, which is useful information about yourself.
Does the index matter if I only hold USDT?
Not really. If you hold stablecoins to protect purchasing power against naira depreciation, market sentiment is not your variable — the naira rate is. The index is measuring something you are not exposed to.
