The arithmetic nobody in the group does
The most common thing said about SHIB in Nigerian crypto groups is that it only needs to reach one cent. Let us do that calculation.
SHIB launched with a supply of one quadrillion tokens — 1,000,000,000,000,000. A large portion was burned early, leaving a circulating supply in the region of 589 trillion.
| If SHIB reached | Market capitalisation would be | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| $0.0001 | ≈ $59 billion | Roughly a top-five crypto asset |
| $0.001 | ≈ $589 billion | More than Ethereum has been worth at most times |
| $0.01 ("one cent") | ≈ $5.9 trillion | More than the entire crypto market, several times over |
| $1 | ≈ $589 trillion | Several times the total value of everything on earth |
One cent is not a modest target. It is arithmetically impossible without a supply reduction of a scale that has never happened. Anyone telling a Nigerian audience that SHIB "only needs one cent" has either not done this multiplication or is relying on you not doing it.
This matters because it changes what a reasonable expectation looks like. SHIB doubling is entirely possible — it has done so repeatedly. SHIB reaching a cent is not. Hold it for the first reason, not the second.
What burning actually does
Token burning — permanently removing tokens from supply — is central to SHIB community discussion, and its effect is consistently overstated.
Burns of the scale actually achieved remove a very small fraction of a 589-trillion supply. To move the price meaningfully by supply reduction alone you would need to burn most of the supply, which would require someone to buy most of the supply in order to destroy it. The burn is a real mechanism with a real but modest effect; it is not a path to a cent.
The honest way to think about SHIB's price. It moves on demand, not supply — attention, exchange listings, and whether the broader market is in a risk-taking mood. Judge it as a momentum and attention asset, which is what it is, rather than as a supply story.
Shibarium and the ecosystem
To its credit, SHIB has built more than most meme coins. Shibarium is an Ethereum layer-2 network launched in 2023, using SHIB in its fee mechanism, alongside additional tokens in the ecosystem — BONE for governance and LEASH — and a decentralised exchange.
The fair assessment: this is a genuine attempt to give a meme coin utility, and adoption has been modest relative to the ambition. Shibarium's activity is a small fraction of the major layer-2 networks. It has not changed SHIB's character — the price still moves with attention rather than with network usage — but it does distinguish SHIB from a token with nothing behind it at all.
Why SHIB is popular in Nigeria specifically
- The price per token looks affordable. ₦10,000 buys a very large number of SHIB, which feels different from buying a fraction of a Bitcoin. It is a psychological effect rather than a financial one — ₦10,000 of SHIB and ₦10,000 of BTC are the same amount of money at risk.
- The 2021 story. SHIB's rise that year produced life-changing returns for early holders and an enormous amount of Nigerian coverage. That story is why it remains a default first altcoin here.
- Genuine liquidity. Unlike most meme coins, SHIB is listed widely and has a real naira exit. This is a substantive advantage.
- Community. Large, active Nigerian SHIB groups sustain interest independently of price.
On the "affordable price" point. A low price per token tells you nothing about whether an asset is cheap. What matters is market capitalisation relative to prospects. A coin at ₦0.00002 with 589 trillion tokens is not cheaper than a coin at ₦100,000 with 20 million tokens — this is the single most common error in Nigerian altcoin buying.
Buying SHIB with naira
Buy USDT first
Via a licensed exchange or P2P. See the P2P guide.
Swap USDT for SHIB on the exchange's spot market
Not through a wallet swap, which costs materially more.
If you withdraw, mind the network
SHIB is an ERC-20 token, so Ethereum withdrawal fees apply and can be substantial relative to a small holding. Some exchanges support cheaper networks — check before withdrawing. See networks.
Size it as tier-4 money
Within the 5% you have written off — see the allocation framework.
Decide your exit in advance
If it doubles, sell half. Write it down before you buy, because you will not decide well while it is moving.
Verdict
| For | Against |
|---|---|
| Real liquidity and a genuine naira exit, unlike most meme coins | No cash flow and no floor under the price |
| Has survived multiple cycles — a real signal | Supply arithmetic makes the popular price targets impossible |
| Shibarium is a genuine attempt at utility | Ecosystem adoption is modest relative to ambition |
| Large active community sustaining attention | Attention is the entire value driver, and attention moves |
A reasonable tier-4 holding for a Nigerian who understands they are buying attention rather than fundamentals, and who is not waiting for one cent. Not a savings plan — for that, see stablecoins.
We do not print prices in prose — they go stale and cost readers money. Every figure you need is live on crypto prices in naira.
Frequently asked questions
Can SHIB reach 1 cent?
No — not as a matter of opinion but of arithmetic. At about 589 trillion tokens circulating, one cent would imply a market capitalisation near $5.9 trillion, which is several times the entire crypto market. SHIB doubling is entirely possible; one cent is not.
Will SHIB burning make the price rise?
Only marginally. Burns of the scale actually achieved remove a very small fraction of a 589-trillion supply, and burning most of it would require someone to buy most of it in order to destroy it. SHIB's price moves on attention and demand, not supply.
How do I buy SHIB with naira in Nigeria?
Buy USDT first through a licensed exchange or P2P, then swap USDT for SHIB on the exchange's spot market rather than through a wallet swap. If you withdraw, check the network — SHIB is an ERC-20 token and Ethereum fees can be large relative to a small holding.
Is SHIB a good investment for Nigerians?
It is speculation, not investment — no cash flow, no floor. It does have real liquidity and a genuine naira exit, which most meme coins lack. Size it inside the roughly 5% of your crypto you have genuinely written off.
What is Shibarium?
An Ethereum layer-2 network launched in 2023 that uses SHIB in its fee mechanism, alongside BONE for governance and a decentralised exchange. It is a genuine attempt to give a meme coin utility, and adoption has been modest relative to the ambition.
Why is SHIB so popular in Nigeria?
A combination of the 2021 rise producing life-changing returns for early holders, a low price per token that feels affordable, real liquidity with a naira exit, and large active Nigerian community groups. The affordability is psychological — ₦10,000 of SHIB and ₦10,000 of BTC are the same money at risk.
