Marketplace versus exchange P2P
| Standalone marketplace | Exchange P2P | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Paxful, Noones | Bybit, Bitget, Binance, OKX |
| Core business | The marketplace itself | An on-ramp feeding a trading platform |
| Payment methods | Very wide — including gift cards, mobile money and unusual rails | Bank transfer and the major fintechs |
| Naira liquidity now | Reduced | Much deeper |
| Fees | Charged to the seller or the advertiser | Commonly 0% for takers |
| Then you can | Withdraw to your wallet | Trade hundreds of assets in the same account |
The wide payment-method support was the real distinction and it mattered in Nigeria: you could sell Bitcoin for an Amazon gift card, or trade rails that no exchange would touch. That flexibility is also what made these marketplaces harder to police.
What happened to Paxful
Paxful was, for years, one of the most-used crypto platforms in Nigeria — a genuine part of the local market's history, particularly for gift card trading.
In April 2023 it abruptly suspended its marketplace, with its chief executive citing staff departures and regulatory challenges, and a public dispute with a co-founder followed. The marketplace was later restored, but the interruption did lasting damage: Nigerian users who had balances and active trades experienced a period of uncertainty they had not chosen, and a great deal of Nigerian volume moved permanently to exchange P2P.
The lesson is the same one Patricia teaches. A platform can suspend service for reasons that have nothing to do with you, and while it is suspended your balance is inaccessible. Whatever platform you use, keep only working balances on it — see self-custody and the Patricia postmortem.
Noones was launched by Paxful's co-founder Ray Youssef with an explicit focus on emerging markets including Nigeria, offering a similar wide-payment-method P2P model alongside messaging and community features.
The gift card niche
The one thing these marketplaces still do that exchange P2P does not is gift cards. If you hold an Amazon, Apple or Steam card and want crypto, a marketplace supporting that payment method is a route that exchange P2P simply does not offer.
It is also the highest-fraud corner of P2P, in both directions — a card can be already redeemed, or later cancelled by the issuer after the trade completes. Our full treatment is in gift cards to crypto in Nigeria, including why rates sit well below face value and how to vet a vendor.
Risks specific to wide-payment-method P2P
- Reversible payment methods are the core problem. A gift card or a card-funded payment can be reversed or cancelled after you have released crypto. Bank transfer on NIP cannot, which is why exchange P2P sticks to it.
- Dispute outcomes depend on evidence you may not have. Proving a gift card was valid when you received it is much harder than proving a bank credit landed.
- Thinner naira liquidity now means wider spreads than exchange P2P for the same trade.
- Off-platform pressure. The same rule applies as everywhere: any counterparty wanting to move to WhatsApp is to be refused.
- Platform continuity. Demonstrated, in 2023.
Where Nigerians should actually trade P2P now
| You want to | Use |
|---|---|
| Buy or sell crypto for naira by bank transfer | Bybit or Bitget P2P — deepest naira books, 0% taker fee. See best P2P exchanges. |
| Avoid dealing with a merchant at all | A Nigerian platform's naira wallet — Quidax, Busha |
| Trade a gift card for crypto | A dedicated card platform, or a marketplace that supports it — see gift cards to crypto |
| Trade an unusual payment rail | A wide-method marketplace, with extra caution about reversibility |
| Move a large amount | A registered OTC desk — see selling for naira |
Whichever you use, the rules do not change: escrow only, high-completion counterparties only, release only on a real bank credit, neutral narration, and a dedicated low-balance account. The full routine is in P2P crypto trading in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Is Paxful still available in Nigeria?
Paxful suspended its marketplace in April 2023 amid staff departures and regulatory challenges and later restored it, but a great deal of Nigerian volume moved permanently to exchange P2P during the interruption. Check current availability and naira liquidity directly before relying on it.
What is Noones?
A P2P marketplace launched by Paxful's co-founder Ray Youssef with an explicit focus on emerging markets including Nigeria, offering a similar wide-payment-method model alongside messaging and community features.
What is the difference between Paxful and Binance P2P?
Standalone marketplaces support a much wider range of payment methods, including gift cards and unusual rails that exchanges will not touch. Exchange P2P has far deeper naira liquidity, typically 0% taker fees, and lets you trade hundreds of assets in the same account afterwards.
Why is gift card P2P riskier than bank transfer P2P?
Because a gift card can be already redeemed or later cancelled by the issuer after you have released crypto, whereas a NIBSS bank credit cannot be reversed. Disputes are also harder to win — proving a card was valid when received is much harder than proving a bank credit landed.
Where should Nigerians trade P2P now?
Bybit or Bitget for naira by bank transfer — deepest books and 0% taker fees. A Nigerian platform's naira wallet if you would rather not deal with a merchant. A dedicated card platform or wide-method marketplace only if you specifically need gift card support.
What lesson does the Paxful suspension teach?
That a platform can suspend service for reasons unconnected to you, and while it is suspended your balance is inaccessible. Keep only working balances on any platform and hold long-term crypto in a wallet you control.
