Free mining apps and cloud mining — what they really are

Mining apps and cloud mining contracts are among the most heavily marketed crypto products in Nigeria, and almost none of them mine anything. The reasons are physical and arithmetic rather than a matter of opinion, and they take about five minutes to understand.

Phone mining does not exist

Not "is unprofitable". Does not exist. An app on your phone cannot mine Bitcoin in any meaningful sense, and the reason is a ratio.

A modern Bitcoin ASIC performs around 200 trillion hash computations per second and draws 3.5 kilowatts. A smartphone processor, working flat out, manages a few million — and would drain its battery, overheat and throttle within minutes. The phone's contribution to the Bitcoin network would be smaller than a rounding error, and the electricity to charge it would exceed anything earned by orders of magnitude.

So when an app shows a mining counter ticking up, nothing is being mined. The number is a display. The app is doing one or more of: showing you advertisements, harvesting your contact list and device data, driving referrals, or accumulating an "internal balance" that will require a fee to withdraw and will never actually pay out.

The one honest exception worth naming: Pi Network is often described as phone mining and is not mining in the computational sense either — it is a consensus-participation and referral mechanism. It is a genuinely different case from the fake mining apps and we cover it separately.

Cloud mining contracts

Cloud mining is a coherent idea in principle: someone else owns the hardware and you buy a share of its output. In practice it fails on arithmetic before it fails on honesty.

As our mining economics page shows, mining margins are thin even for large operators with cheap electricity. Now add a layer: the cloud provider must cover hardware, power, hosting, staff and marketing, and then make a profit — all from the same thin margin. What is left for you is negative before the contract begins.

Cloud mining claimReality
"Fixed daily return of 2%"Impossible. Mining revenue varies with difficulty, price and uptime. A fixed return means it is not mining revenue.
"Contract pays back in 60 days"Faster than the hardware itself pays back for anyone. The money is from later depositors.
"We have a farm in Kazakhstan"Photographs are free. Ask for a verifiable pool address and independently confirm the hashrate.
"Withdraw anytime"Works early. Then a minimum, then a fee, then a verification requirement.
"Refer friends for 10% of their deposit"The actual business model.

The three-question test

Apply this to any mining product and you will not need to know anything technical.

  1. Is the return fixed?

Real mining revenue is variable — always. A fixed daily or monthly percentage cannot come from mining. It comes from deposits. Fixed return means Ponzi.

  2. Can I verify the hashrate independently?

A genuine operation mines to a pool, and pool statistics are public. If they cannot give you an address you can check yourself, there is no hardware.

  3. Does earning depend on recruiting?

If referral commissions are a headline feature, the business is recruitment. The mining is the story.

In our experience essentially every mining app and cloud contract marketed to Nigerian users fails at least one of these, and usually all three.

The lifecycle, which is always the same

PhaseWhat you see
1. LaunchSlick app, generous returns, small withdrawals paid promptly. Early users post proof and recruit.
2. GrowthReferral tiers, "upgrade your plan", influencer promotion, WhatsApp and Telegram groups.
3. FrictionWithdrawal minimums rise. A verification fee appears. "System maintenance" delays payouts.
4. The askPay a fee to unlock your balance. Some people pay it. Nobody is paid.
5. SilenceApp vanishes, groups deleted, operators unreachable.
6. The second scam"Recovery experts" appear in the abandoned groups, charging upfront fees.

If you are at phase 3 or 4 right now, stop paying. The fee to unlock your balance is the point of the whole exercise. No amount of additional payment will release anything. Preserve your evidence and report it — the process is in avoid crypto scams.

And if you have capital and wanted mining exposure: buying the coin outright beats any mining arrangement available to a Nigerian retail participant, for the reasons set out in crypto mining in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mine Bitcoin on my phone?

No — not unprofitably, but not at all in any meaningful sense. A mining ASIC performs around 200 trillion computations per second; a phone manages a few million before overheating. Any app showing a mining counter is displaying a number, not mining.

Are free crypto mining apps legitimate?

Essentially none of them. They show advertisements, harvest device and contact data, drive referrals, and accumulate an internal balance that eventually requires a fee to withdraw and never pays out.

Is cloud mining profitable?

No. Mining margins are thin even for large operators with cheap electricity, and a cloud provider must cover hardware, power, hosting, staff, marketing and profit from that same margin. What is left for you is negative before the contract starts.

How can I tell if a mining product is a Ponzi?

Three questions. Is the return fixed? Real mining revenue is always variable, so a fixed percentage cannot come from mining. Can you independently verify the hashrate at a public pool? Does earning depend on recruiting others? Failing any one is enough.

The app says I must pay a fee to withdraw my mining balance. Should I?

No. That fee is the point of the whole scheme — it is the moment the operation collects. No further payment will release anything. Stop paying, preserve your evidence and report it.

What about Pi Network — is that phone mining?

Pi is not mining in the computational sense either, but it is a genuinely different case from the fake mining apps — a consensus-participation and referral mechanism rather than a fake counter. We cover it separately on our Pi Network page.
